In the framework of the "Slovenia and the EU" lecture cycle
the International Institute for Middle-East and Balkan Studies (IFIMES)
invites You kindly to the round table
entitled
WHAT KIND OF EU DO WE NEED?
which will take place on Monday, 31 March 2014 at 16.00 h
in the “Grad” hall of Hotel Lev (13th floor) at Vošnjakova 1, Ljubljana.
Elections to the European Parliament, the only direct-democracy institution in the EU, will be held in May this year. After EP elections the new European Commission will also be elected. Marked by the economic crisis, this pre-election period calls for a thorough reflection on what kind of EU we actually need.
Those and other issues will be discussed at the round table by the following experts:
● Guy Verhofstadt, Chair of the ALDE/ADLE Group in the European Parliament, former Prime Minister of Belgium (1999-2008) and the candidate of ALDE liberals for European Commission President;
● Dr. Angelika Mlinar (NEOS), Carinthian Slovenian, member of the Austrian Federal Parliament.
● Prof. Dr. Ernest Petrič, former Slovenian ambassador, an expert on international law and international relations and a judge at the Constitutional Court; and
● Jelko Kacin (ALDE/LDS), MEP, Vice-Chair of EP Delegation for relations with South-East Europe and EP Rapporteur for Serbia.
A video speech will be delivered by EU Commissioner for the Environment Dr. Janez Potočnik.
The round table will be held in the Slovenian language and moderated by Zijad Bećirović.
Simultaneous interpretation into English language will be provided.
