In the framework of the "Slovenia and the EU" lecture cycle
the International Institute for Middle-East and Balkan Studies (IFIMES)

PARLIAMENTARY DEMOCRACY AND CENTRES OF SOCIAL POWER
which will be delivered by the
Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Slovenia Dr. Pavel Gantar
The lecture will be held on Thursday, 25 November 2010 at 16.00 hin the Auditorium of Center Evropa at Dalmatinova 4 in Ljubljana.
Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Slovenia Dr. Pavel Gantar will talk about social centres and the increasing shifting of their power from the political to other spheres. He will also speak about other current events in Slovenia.
In 1980's Dr. Gantar was actively involved in new social movements and he wrote several articles on civil society in the socialist regime. From 1984 to 1990 he was a columnist at Mladina weekly magazine and president of ŠKUC-Forum which was the centre of alternative cultural movement at that time. In 2004 Dr. Gantar was elected deputy to the National Assembly, prior to which he was Minister of the Environment and Spatial Planning (1994 - 2000) and Minister of Information Society (2001 - 2004).
The lecture will be delivered in the Slovenian language and will be followed by a discussion with the guest lecturer which will be moderated by Zijad Bećirović and Bakhatyar Aljaf, during which the participants will be invited to ask questions.
