Sarajevo, 30 June 2021 – Director of the International Institute for Middle East and Balkan Studies (IFIMES[1]) Assist. Prof. Dr. Zijad Bećirović met with the Rector of the University of Sarajevo (UNSA) Prof. Dr. Rifat Škrijelj.
In 2017, the University of Sarajevo and IFIMES signed a cooperation agreement. At the meeting, they discussed forms and ways to strengthen cooperation.
Director Bećirović praised the work of the University in all respects and emphasized the support for the adoption of a new law on higher education, which will significantly strengthen the autonomy of the university and academic freedom. This will enable further development of the University of Sarajevo and its even better position in the international academic community.
The director of IFIMES said that the University of Sarajevo, as the leading higher education, scientific research and pedagogical institution in Bosnia and Herzegovina, has many potentials that it can offer and present at the international level. Rector dr. Škrijelj thanked the director Bećirović and IFIMES, who made their capacities and staff available as part of their activities with the aim of even greater affirmation and international recognition.
Rector dr. Škrijelj and Director dr. Bećirović announced the organization of joint events this autumn, including the promotion of books such as the proceedings of the international scientific conference entitled “Genocide against Bosniaks, Srebrenica 1995-2020: Causes, Scope and Consequences”, organized by IFIMES in Ljubljana together with the University of Sarajevo, the UNSA Institute for the Study of Crimes against Humanity and International Law, and the UNSA Institute for History.
