The urgency of territorial transformation of Slovenian municipalities

In the framework of the "Slovenia and the EU" lecture cycle,

the International Institute for Middle-East and Balkan Studies (IFIMES)

invites You kindly to the round table

entitled

"THE URGENCY OF TERRITORIAL TRANSFORMATION OF SLOVENIAN MUNICIPALITIES"

which will be held on Tuesday, 8 November 2011, at 16.00 h
in the Auditorium of Center Evropa at Dalmatinova 4 in Ljubljana
.

In numerous European countries the changes in the social, political and economic scenes have triggered local community transformation processes in order to deal more efficiently with local tasks and some tasks delegated from the state. The starting point of these processes is the connection between the territorial changes and the substantive issues, especially such as good governance for the benefit of the citizens.

What about Slovenia? Have there been any endeavours in this direction, ensuring the future financial and human resources necessary to achieve the best quality of public services and to meet the modern needs of citizens?

One of the reasons for the crisis in Slovenian local government - from the organisational management point of view - is the large number of inefficient municipalities, which strengthens centralism in the state.

That is why we have to determine the point at which the local communities would be economically able to ensure the management of complicated public services. This undoubtedly represents one of the basic challenges for future development of local government.

Those and other issues will be discussed at the round table by the following independent experts:

- Dr. Stane Vlaj
- Dr. Albin Igličar and
- Dr. Miloš Senčur.

The round table will be held in the Slovenian language and moderated by Zijad Bećirović.

Attendance is free of charge. Please confirm your participation at telephone number (01) 430 15 33 or at ifimes@ifimes.org.

The realisation of the event in Center Evropa was enabled by Government Communication Office and European Commission Representation in Slovenia.
