The International Institute for Middle-East and Balkan Studies (IFIMES)
invites You kindly to take part at the conference entitled
In Slovenia, local elections are approaching. They will take place on November 18, 2018. The previous Government of the Republic of Slovenia did not struggle a lot on the issues of local and regional self-government. Does the coalition treaty give the local self-government sufficient weight (and scope)? How does the coalition treaty define the first level of local self-government (number of municipalities, their aggregation, perhaps even the abolition) and how the second one (the province)? In the relationship between local government and the state, may something change (for example, transferring some or most of the tasks of administrative units to municipalities, etc.)? What will be the main challenges of the new mayors and of the municipalities in the new four-year term? What is the position on the possible limitation of the mayor's mandate, and what about the institute of the mayor's recall? Is there a possibility that the function of the mayor and deputy will be compatible again? What about the role of the National Council (and the mayor in it)? What can we expect in this area after the elections?
These and other issues will be discussed by:
The event will be in Slovene followed by a discussion moderated by Assist. Prof. Dr. Zijad Bećirović.
